Over 55s February Travel Scholarship to Cambodia....

Below is a letter prepared by my colleague Jim Wakelam as part of our Responsible Travel scholarships for over 55s in February. If you are interested in responsible travel, over 55 and live near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, you might like to consider applying by following through Jim's letter and responding appropriately.

============================

Hi there.

Thank you for expressing interest in the Uniting Journeys Scholarship to Cambodia.
We are passionate about changing the way people travel – for everybody, and we suspect that you may share our perspective on travelling responsibly.

We have a vision for travel as pilgrimage.  A traveller becomes a pilgrim the moment the things they are experiencing start to shape their own “inner landscape” or if you prefer, their spiritual lives.  In this sense every intentional journey, when accompanied by knowledge and passion, can become a pilgrimage.

We think that by getting involved in developing competitive travel product which just happens to be ethical and responsible, we can begin to influence systemic change.

Are you 55 or older? You may want to join us on a “training journey” for potential hosts who will act as conversation partners for future journeys.

The following Responsible Tourism seven core elements, slightly modified from the 2002 Cape Town Declaration, provide a useful platform for our approach to responsible travel.

Responsible travel:
• optimises positive economic, environmental and social impacts
• generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhances well-being of host communities; improves working conditions and access to industry
• involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and opportunities
• makes positive contributions to the conservation of diverse natural and cultural heritage
• provides enjoyable experiences for tourists through meaningful connections with local people and a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues
• provides access for physically challenged people
• is culturally sensitive, encourages respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride and confidence
